Hair is big. We all know that. It expresses our inner souls. Here are my top 10 girl characters notable for, among other things, their hair.
1. Anne Shirley
I especially like when she dyes her red hair green.
2. Scout Finch
Scout wastes no time on frills, but empathizes with Boo and Tom Robinson.
3. Princess Leia
Even her hair has the Force.
4. Celie Johnson
My favorite epistolary novel character of all time, Celie appreciates fine hair.
5. Sarah Crewe
Sarah's grim poverty is reflected in her changing hairstyles in the poignant illustrations by Tasha Tudor.
6. Dorothy Gale
Kansas girl does good. She gets a new style and a mission in Oz.
7. Ophelia
I picture her drowning with garlands in her hair, heartbroken and insane. And what's with that rue? Was she pregnant?
8. Arabella Bishop
The feisty, dainty, stylish Miss Bishop is Peter's even match in Sabatini's Captain Blood.
9. Storm
She just rocks.
10. Rapunzel
She's the fairy tale princess who started it all. (Tasha Tudor illustrates again.) Why didn't Rapunzel just climb down her own braid, cut it off when she reached the bottom of the tower, and get away?
All best,
Caragh

I'd like to nominate members of the Baby-Sitters Club for adjunct membership in the Hair Club for Fictional Girls. Claudia Kishi rocked many highly original styles in books 2, 8 and 17 (okay, I'm making that up), such as putting her hair in lots of tiny braids and piling them on top of her head, topped by butterflies and dinosaurs.
Also, let's not forget Stacey McGill, who, because she was from New York, had a perm. (Can I just say, as someone who grew up in NYC in the 90s? It was the suburban girls who had perms, *nawt* New Yorkers.) Still, she was an inspiration to many.
Love it.
Great list.
I absolutely ADORE the fact that Whoopi Goldberg made this list. :-)
All best,
Caragh
