Did you know that you wanted to be a writer when you were younger?

How did you query if you did not want to be a writer? Did you just get good feedback from friends/family and then decide to query?

I've always written, but I didn't think consciously about being a writer when I was young. It wasn't until after I'd written the first draft of My Way or the Highway that I realized I *was* a writer and I had something that people might actually want to read.

Hey gals and guys,

I'm in the middle of working on a project right now and can't really sift through the thread at the moment. But if you have any questions for me specifically, feel free to ask me here: http://authortarakelly.livejournal.com/2625.html and I'll answer them as soon as I can!

Thanks,

YAY ASK A TENNER IS BACK!

Okay, my first question's for everyone who has a cover out. I'm curious - how much input did you get on yours? What was the whole process like? Any frustrations?
karenkincy
Aug. 20th, 2009 08:45 pm (UTC)
My cover isn't out yet, but I was able to make a list of covers I liked as well as suggestions for mine. We'll see how it turns out!

3. my laptop
4. a wifi tower of some kind
5. book...hmmm. I know I'll get berated over this one, but I'd probably pick Twilight.

Ooo... that is SO tough! Can I at least expand it to top three?

HEX HALL - 'cause Rach was my first agent mate buddy and I've been chatting with Holly (our agent) about HH since we both sold way back yonder last year

PRINCESS FOR HIRE - 'cause I read an early version of it and sooo want to see how the story ended up after final edits

THE MARK - 'cause this is a brilliant concept that distantly reminds me of one of my fave Nickelback videos (and I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after I first read the blurb - should you tell or shouldn't you???)

Re: The Call
My book had been out on submission a couple of weeks, and up to that point I hadn't let many family members read it. My sister finally convinced me to send her a copy. She immediately found a couple of major inconsistencies. No one else had caught some leftovers from earlier revisions (references to an extra character who had been taken out). I emailed my agent telling her there were mistakes. She emailed me right back saying not to panic, because she had just heard from an editor who was interested, but wanted revisions. That was the most exciting part of the process, because the rest was so drawn out with revisions, and waiting on acquisition committee decisions, that I was mainly just crazed and exhausted by the time my agent called with a definite offer.

Re: The Call
The agent call was absolutely shocking because she'd only had the full for two days. But my two-year-old son was flipping out, so I had to take him outside to watch construction and thus allow me to talk. So, instead of cool, calm, and collected, my agent got heavy machinery in the background : )

The call about my first offer was also incredibly strange. Agent Michelle said, "We've got an offer. I think we should say no." Last thing I ever expected to do! It worked out though.

Also, I've always gotten a kick out of the fact that The Call is capitalized. But I totally agree with it.

I yelled a naughty word at my agent (happily yelled, I should say!), so that def. stands out, haha! Mostly I jsut remember thinking that I had read about this moment from so many authors, and I couldn't believe it was happening! So I'll agree w/Heidi, and say it was VERY surreal.
